Rangers have confirmed the signing of free agent defender Gareth McAuley on a one-year contract.

The centre-back parted ways with West Brom after their relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season and becomes the latest recruit for Gers boss Steven Gerrard.

McAuley will fight for a starting spot with Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall, who joined on loan from Nottingham Forest before the transfer window closed last week.

The 38-year-old will be looking to add his experience to Gerrard's side, as Rangers aim to compete at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

McAuley made 203 appearances in the Premier League for West Brom and has also featured for Northern Ireland at international level.

Indeed, the veteran defender has won 79 caps for Northern Ireland.

McAuley could make his Rangers debut after the international break, when the Gers play host to Neil McCann's Dundee side at Ibrox.

With Europa League group stage football secured, Gerrard has been keen to have a number of options and McAuley will no doubt be relishing the chance to turn out in European competition.
