Former Manchester United defender David May has claimed that Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils have been unnecessarily targeted in the media while others, such as Tottenham Hotspur's Mauricio Pochettino, have got off scot free.

Mourinho and his side released some of the pressure on them by earning a comfortable 2-0 win over Burnley on Sunday and went into the international break in a happier mood.

However, the week building up to the game at Turf Moor brought intense media scrutiny on Mourinho and Manchester United as they looked to recover from back-to-back league defeats.

The Manchester United manager was under increasing pressure to justify his position at the club, but May feels other teams and managers somehow manage to escape the microscope when things go wrong.

He pointed towards Tottenham’s defeat at Watford and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s decision to isolate Leroy Sane at the start of the season as some of the examples of how only Manchester United are driving the news while others don’t get the same kind of scrutiny.

May said on MUTV’s The Paddy Crerand Show: “Tottenham got beat 2-1 and they are supposed to be challenging for the title.

“Nothing gets mentioned about it, nothing.

“Guardiola has not played Sane for the last four games and nothing gets mentioned.”

He added: “You can pick holes in anyone, but it is everything to do with Manchester United because we are the biggest team.

“That’s just what the papers and the media will carry on doing it until they drive the manager out, but they won’t do that.”
