Ajax rejected a big money offer from Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Frenkie de Jong during the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old midfielder has emerged as a target for a number of big clubs across Europe and Ajax are worried that they could soon lose the talented Dutchman.

A number of top clubs knocked on Ajax’s door to discuss the possibility of signing the midfielder, but the Dutch champions resisted selling him and kept hold of him for the time being.

And it has been claimed Tottenham, who did not sign anyone in the summer, were interested in getting their hands on the young Dutchman in the recently concluded window.

According to Catalan daily Sport, Ajax rejected a €50m bid from the north London side for the 21-year-old midfielder before the start of the new season.

Barcelona have also been keeping tabs on him and their €30m offer was also knocked back by Ajax, who are demanding around €75m for the player.

De Jong has emerged as Barcelona’s priority target, but they are unlikely to make a move until the next summer transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham make an ambitious move to sign the Dutchman in January.
