Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri has advised Blues legend John Terry to continue playing if he feels fit enough to go through another season of professional football at the top level.

Terry spent 22 years at Stamford Bridge with the Premier League giants before calling it time on his career with Chelsea and moving on to the Championship with Aston Villa at the beginning of last season.

The Englishman, who made over 700 appearances for Chelsea, helped Aston Villa reach the playoff final last year, but they eventually lost to Fulham, who secured promotion to the Premier League.

The 37-year-old is now a free agent and recently turned down a move to the Russian Premier League with Spartak Moscow after he decided to snub the offer, citing family reasons.

The former Chelsea captain is a five-time Premier League winner with the Blues and was last seen training at Cobham during the international break alongside former team-mate Michael Essien.

Sarri, who took over from Antonio Conte in the summer, has now claimed that he thinks Terry can continue playing for at least another year before taking his first step into a coaching role.

"The last time I spoke with him he told me that he wants to play for another season", Sarri told a press conference.

"Chelsea is his home, of course.

"For sure, he will be a point of reference for me, for everybody here [if he comes back to coach]. It's up to him.

“If he wants to play for another season, I think it's right he tries to play", he added.

Terry has been keen to avoid playing against Chelsea, something which motivated his decision to drop into the Championship with Aston Villa.
