Former Manchester United forward Danny Webber has insisted that it is up to Marcus Rashford to put in the performances that will make it difficult for Jose Mourinho to drop him from the starting eleven.

There have been calls for Rashford to leave Manchester United to play more football but Mourinho came out fighting last week and insisted that the striker has played enough since he took charge at Old Trafford.

The suggestion is that the 20-year-old has not been getting enough opportunities in the starting eleven but Webber stressed that it will be hard for him to dislodge Romelu Lukaku in the number 9 role.

However, he feels it is up to Rashford to make sure whenever he plays that he puts in the performances and scores the goals necessary to make it increasingly difficult for Mourinho to drop him.

Webber believes Jesse Lingard is the perfect example for Rashford in how to become a certain member of the starting eleven under the current Manchester United manager.

The former Red Devil said on MUTV when asked about Rashford’s game time under Mourinho: “I think he is getting his game time and he will play more.

“We know Lukaku is the number one on the team-sheet when it comes to the number 9 role.

“It is up to Marcus to keep pushing and when he gets on the pitch and gets game time, [he will have to] score his goals, which is his currency.

“When you are a front man – Jesse did it well last year. When it came to fruition, he scored important goals and he is now seen as one of the first choices on the team sheet.

“That’s all he has to do. He has to add end product to his game, show his magic and make yourself difficult for the manager to leave out.

“But he definitely has got everything and I love to see him play.”

No player has played more competitive matches for a Premier League club than Rashford (126) since his debut in February 2016.
