Liverpool legend Steve McMahon thinks that Trent Alexander-Arnold is clearly England's best option at right-back, with Kieran Trippier's only potential advantage over the Red coming when the Three Lions play with wing-backs.

Alexander-Arnold has taken vast strides at Anfield over the course of the last 12 months, taking advantage of Nathaniel Clyne's injury problems to nail down the right-back spot under Jurgen Klopp.

He was again in good form on Saturday as Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley and McMahon was watching closely, with Alexander-Arnold and Trippier both on display.

McMahon thinks Alexander-Arnold will go a long way in the game and must be England's first choice if they play four at the back.

"Champions League football, Premier League football on a regular basis. Look at some of the other players in the squad, they are not even close to him at his age in terms of appearances", McMahon said on LFC TV.

"He's going to go a long way. He's there for a long, long time.

"Only because Liverpool play a four and Tottenham often play a three is Kieran Trippier suited a bit more to the wing-back position.

"[But] he [Alexander-Arnold] can fill that berth as well.

"So he should be number one at right-back for England, number one at right-back for Liverpool", he added.

Alexander-Arnold, 19, came through the youth ranks at Liverpool and the Reds opted against sending him out on a loan spell.

The defender has been capped three times at international level by England.
