Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jerome Rothen believes Liverpool have the best set of full-backs in Europe, in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

Liverpool will open their Champions League campaign tonight when they host French champions PSG at Anfield in their opening group game.

Following their run to the final of the competition last season, the Reds are again being backed to reach the latter stages of the Champions League, especially after summer of strengthening.

Alexander-Arnold and Robertson’s form last season played a vital role in Liverpool’s run in Europe and Rothen stressed that they are the best full-backs in Europe at the moment.

While he admits that Reds academy graduate Alexander-Arnold still has defensive mistakes in him, the former PSG midfielder believes the quality he brings in attack makes him more valuable.

Talking about the Englishman, he told French sports daily L’Equipe: “He is the best right back in Europe at the moment.

“He has interesting qualities as a player, makes few defensive mistakes and has the technical skill to bring the ball out in attack or create chances when Liverpool attack swiftly.

“Last season he was very good.”

Rothen is also a fan of Robertson, the Scotland captain, and insisted that apart from his attacking qualities, the Scot also rarely looks in any kind of trouble while defending.

He continued: “Like Alexander-Arnold on the right, he’s for me the best left-back in Europe.

“He can attack and especially defensively, he is rarely in trouble.

“He too contributed a lot in Liverpool’s European run last season.”
