Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes James Milner is an example for the rest of his squad and admits that he is not surprised by the praise he has been getting this season.

With Liverpool signing Naby Keita and Fabinho in the summer, not many expected Milner to feature regularly in the Reds midfield, but he has been a revelation for them.

The 31-year-old has started all their games thus far and won the ball from Kylian Mbappe on Tuesday night that led to Robert Firmino scoring the winner against Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Leeds and Newcastle man is getting copious amounts of praise for his performances but Klopp is not surprised as Milner was pivotal in Europe last season too.

And he insisted that the player still has years left ahead of him and is an example for the rest of the squad in terms of attitude, fitness and quality.

Asked if he is surprised by Milner’s performance this season, Klopp said in a press conference: “It’s not just this season, last year he had most assists in Champions League.

“I said it a few times that only in football it sounds like 32 was a massive age. In all other parts of life, you are still young, and he is still young.”

The German continued: “He is a top professional and his body gives him the opportunity to do so.

“James is the best example for them [the squad]. He is a very energetic and lively boy and likes to cover big distances. He can play football, and that makes him a pretty valuable player.

“I am not surprised of course.”
