Sunderland boss Jack Ross insists that he was enjoying the work he was doing in Scotland, but when the chance to manage the Black Cats came he took counsel from others and came to the conclusion that he would regret it if he did not take up the job.

The 42-year-old won the Scottish Championship with St Mirren at the end of the 2017/18 season, in the process getting the team promoted to the top division.

The work Ross did with the Scottish club did not go unnoticed, with Ipswich Town and Sunderland being given permission to speak to him.

The former defender insists that it was a tough decision to make as he was enjoying life in Scotland and had just rejected an offer from Barnsley.

Ross finally came to the conclusion to join the Black Cats after taking counsel from others and coming to the decision that he would regret it if he did not take the opportunity.

“I’d had different opportunities over a short period of time and whether you are a player or a manager these opportunities don’t come around very often and it can change very quickly as well", Ross was quoted as saying by Chronicle Live.

“The job I was doing in Scotland was good, I was enjoying it and we had something to look forward to having just won promotion to the Premiership.

“However, when this opportunity presented itself and the more I thought about it and the more I took counsel from other people, I began to understand that it was opportunity I would regret if I hadn’t taken it."

Ross' team have enjoyed a bright start to the League One campaign and are placed fourth in the table with 15 points from eight league games.
