Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie believes Manchester United are already playing catch-up when it comes to the Premier League title race, though he is sure the Red Devils will finish in the top four.

Jurgen Klopp's side have won all six of their league games so far to collect 18 points, but Manchester United have just ten points and while the Reds were beating Southampton 3-0 on Saturday, were drawing 1-1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Gillespie believes that Manchester United are playing catch-up, which they will not have wanted, but he is unconcerned about suggestions they might miss out on a top four finish.

"Although nothing is decided in late September, you don't want to be playing catch-up. You want to be in that top four and stay there", Gillespie said on LFC TV.

"Liverpool have put themselves in a really good position.

"Man United will finish in the top four, they are good enough to do that.

"Poor result for them [against Wolves], but maybe a draw wasn't a surprise as Wolves were tipped to do pretty well.

"When you're eight points behind after six games you are playing catch-up – but still a long way to go."

Manchester United are scheduled to make the trip to Liverpool in the middle of December and could be under pressure to get a result at Anfield.

The Premier League fixture between the two sides at Old Trafford is towards the end of February.
