Rangers legend Derek Johnstone has insisted that the Glasgow giants’ progress under Steven Gerrard can only be measured once he starts winning trophies.

Under Gerrard, Rangers have qualified for the group stage of the Europa League and earned a good result with a 2-2 draw against Villarreal on matchday one earlier this month.

Rangers are also currently second in the league table and have made better start to their campaign than their Glasgow rivals and Scottish champions Celtic this season.

However, Johnstone insisted that all the talk of progress under Gerrard can only be judged once they start winning silverware, something that they have not done in the top flight in seven years.

And he believes that being in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup is a great opportunity for Rangers and Gerrard to win a trophy this season.

The Rangers legend wrote in his column for the Evening Times: “It is fine saying Rangers are a far different side than they have been for the last couple of years but they have to win something to prove it.

“Once Steven gets a winner’s medal in his pocket, then we can say Rangers are going places once again.

“This is a great chance to get to a final but Rangers won’t take anything for granted and they can’t afford to because Aberdeen know what it takes to get to finals at Hampden.

“A lot of our players don’t have that experience but they have played in the Old Firm games and done well in Europe so I would be confident that they can handle a big semi-final and get to within 90 minutes of a bit of silverware.”

Rangers will face Aberdeen in the semi-finals at Hampden Park at the end of October.
