Victor Lindelof has insisted that he was always aware that playing for Manchester United was going to be a big challenge and step up for him.

Lindelof won the Swedish Footballer of the Year award earlier this week for his performances for Sweden and Manchester United over the last year.

The Swede joined the Red Devils last year from Benfica and Jose Mourinho made sure that he introduced the centre-back to English football more gently and allowed him the time to settle down.

The defender has been a regular for Manchester United this season and received widespread praise for his commanding performance against Juventus last week in the Champions League.

Lindelof admits that he always enjoyed taking on challenges and conceded that playing for a club of Manchester United’s side was always going to be a huge task.

However, he has remained calm and has continued to believe in his ability to produce on the pitch for the Red Devils.

Lindelof told Swedish daily Aftonbladet: “I love challenges, I really do. I never say no to a challenge and I am getting better.

“I didn’t play at Benfica initially. It was also tough as I felt ready.

"Mentally I was already on the pitch of the Da Luz, but then I got my chance, played all the matches and we won the league.”

He continued: “When I arrived at United, I knew it would be a huge challenge but I felt I can do this. It was tough initially and at that level, you have to deliver from the start.

“But I am calm, I am not stressing myself, it gives me a sense of security and I don’t worry too much.

“I know what I can do on the pitch. I know this is what I am going to do all my life.”
