Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McMahon has insisted that he would ideally want the Reds to face FC Porto during the Round of 16 stage of the Champions League this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men booked their berth in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield on Tuesday to finish second in Group C, behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds will be up against one of the leaders from the other groups in the competition during the next round, including Porto, who finished at the summit of Group D with 16 points.

Porto completed their round of fixtures in Group D with a 3-2 win over Galatasaray on Tuesday and finished with 16 points from their six games.

However, McMahon insisted that he would ideally want Liverpool to face Porto rather than the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the Round of 16.

“[I’d like to face] Porto”, McMahon said on LFC TV after the Reds beat Napoli.

“I don't buy into this it doesn't matter [who we play] because you've got to beat the best to win it.

“No, no, let them all battle each other and keep picking teams off.

“You want the easier one. Pick Porto off.”

Liverpool have lost all three of their European away games so far this season and may need to improve on the road to go beyond the last 16 stage.
