Former Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune has conceded that he was baffled by the lack of effort from the Red Devils against Valencia on Wednesday night.

Juventus’ shock defeat to Young Boys opened up the opportunity to the top the group for Manchester United, but Jose Mourinho’s men fluffed their lines at the Mestalla.

A heavily rotated Manchester United side lost 2-1 to Valencia and it brought up fresh questions about their season, which is yet to take off in any shape or form.

Mourinho had his eye on the Liverpool game on Sunday and Fortune admits that he expected to see more effort from the players as some of them were fighting for a place in the team at Anfield.

The former midfielder conceded that a poor performance could be excused if the players at least get the basic rights and put in an effort on the pitch.

He admits that the lack of a competitive edge was baffling on Manchester United’s part.

Fortune said following the game on MUTV: “I was thinking about Liverpool on Sunday.

“Players were playing for places, there should have been energy on the pitch, putting themselves about and giving the manager a problem for Sunday.”

He continued: “For some reason, I’d love to know why we didn’t compete.

"I can understand that sometimes you can play bad games, but you need to get the basics right and that means to give 100 per cent, compete and make it difficult for the opposition.

“We didn’t see that tonight.”
