Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has claimed that Manchester United’s trip to Anfield on Sunday could be Paul Pogba’s last chance to win back Jose Mourinho’s faith.

Pogba, who returned to the starting eleven during the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Valencia in the Champions League, has struggled for consistency after a disappointing start to the season with Manchester United.

The Frenchman did not play a part during Manchester United’s 4-1 thrashing of Fulham last Saturday, but clocked the full 90 minutes during the defeat at the Mestalla on Wednesday night.

Despite being provided with an opportunity to prove his credentials, Pogba was far from his influential best and struggled to make an impact against Valencia as the visitors succumbed to a demoralising defeat.

However, Nicol believes that Pogba should be given the opportunity to start the game against Liverpool, but warns it could be his last chance to win back Mourinho’s trust at Manchester United.

“[Pogba] has to start against Liverpool”, Nicol said, following the game, on TV show ESPN FC.

“You don’t pay over 100m for somebody if he is not talented and the guy is talented.

“This is the sort of game [for him because] we always talk about the big names, and the big players appear in the big games.

“Well, this could be his last opportunity as far as Mourinho is concerned.”

Pogba, who returned to Old Trafford in a club-record deal in 2016, has directly contributed to nine goals from 20 appearances in all competitions so far this term.
