Rangers defender Gareth McAuley says he knows that Northern Ireland team-mate Steven Davis is frustrated at Southampton and is sure he would jump at the chance to return to Ibrox.

Davis has seen his playing time on the south coast suffer and he is out of contract with the Saints at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old, who joined Southampton from Rangers, where he won the league on three occasions, has been linked with a January return to Ibrox.

McAuley has boosted thoughts of a move by admitting that Davis is unhappy at Southampton and insists that the midfielder would relish the chance to pull on a light blue shirt once again.

"I know he’s frustrated that he’s not playing football and, if the opportunity is there for him and things are right with Southampton, then I’m sure he’d love to [return to Rangers]", McAuley was quoted as saying by BT Sport.

"It’s an amazing club. I can’t think of anywhere better to play."

Davis made 200 appearances for Rangers during his spell at Ibrox and has currently clocked up 226 on the south coast with Southampton.

It is unclear how new Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl views Davis' role at the club.
