Former Manchester City defender Richard Dunne has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur need to change their ambitions if they are to keep Harry Kane away from the clutches of bigger clubs.

Kane, who won the Golden Boot award during the FIFA World Cup in the summer, is Tottenham’s leading goalscorer this season with 13 goals in all competitions.

The 25-year-old has quickly established himself as a prominent figure for both club and country in recent years and is increasingly looking like a target for some of the elite clubs in Europe.

Despite resurrecting his career under Mauricio Pochettino after loan spells, Kane is yet to lift a trophy albeit coming close to doing it in the 2015/16 season.

Dunne, who spent almost a decade at Manchester City and played in the Premier League, thinks that Tottenham need to make sure they are capable of fighting for the league title and other trophies to keep Kane.

The former Republic of Ireland international also added that Kane cannot become the best player in the world if he opts to play for a team that are third or fourth best in the country.

“You look at Harry Kane, he wants to be the best player in the world”, Dunne said beIN Sports Soccer Saturday.

“And he is not going to do that in a team that comes third or fourth.

“[He has to leave to become the best in the world] or Tottenham have to change their ambitions.”

Kane is tied down to a contract that runs until 2024 with Tottenham and has been the subject of interest from Real Madrid in the past.
