Former Premier League striker James Scowcroft feels that the Everton fans’ reaction after their team’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday proves they knew they had seen a quality team.

Tottenham dismantled Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park to move to within two points of reigning Premier League champions Manchester City and they are six points behind league leaders Liverpool.

The north Londoners have been in imperious form away from home this season and despite conceding the first goal against Everton on Sunday, Mauricio Pochettino’s side didn’t look troubled and coasted to another win.

The Everton crowd applauded Heung-Min Son after the South Korean was replaced in the second half following his brace.

Scowcroft believes Spurs have to be taken seriously in the title race and that the reaction of the Everton fans said it all.

“It's been an unbelievable performance. Tottenham are right in this title race and they've got to believe it, they really have”, Scowcroft said on BBC Radio London following the game.

“I wonder if they need to forego one of the competitions and focus on the league because I think they've got as good a chance as anybody.

“They haven't got the biggest squad but if they play like today, and they've been playing like this for a while now, they've won nine out of 11 away in the league, then that is title-winning form.

“Everton fans clapped them off, they know they've seen a good team here today.”

Tottenham have two home games next before their clash against Cardiff City on New Year’s Day and the Lilywhites will hope to pick up maximum points to keep the heat on Liverpool and Manchester City.
