Marcelo Bielsa has indicated that his Leeds United squad are short on numbers following two unwanted departures this month.

Leeds are currently at the top of the Championship pile but back-to-back league defeats have led to doubts over the durability of the squad at Bielsa’s disposal.

Ahead of the winter window, the general consensus was that Leeds would need to add bodies to their squad in order to sustain their promotion challenge until the end of the season.

But Leeds have lost players in the form of Samu Saiz, who returned to Spain and Lewis Baker, who has returned to his parent club, Chelsea.

Bielsa admits that he is looking at options to bring into his squad in the winter window, but insisted that the players must be better than what Leeds currently have in their squad.

The Leeds boss also stressed that it was not his or the club’s decision to let either Saiz or Baker leave, but admits that he cannot ignore the fact that Leeds have lost players this month.

He said in a press conference: “First I will see what the possibilities are of the club to bring in players. What kind of players the club can add to the team.

“If they are better than what we have. Obviously, we had [goalkeeper Jamal] Blackman with us, but not anymore.

"Saiz and Baker left and we didn’t want them to leave.

“When I say it was not our decision to make him leave, but me as the head coach, as a club, it was his decision.

“I can’t ignore the fact we have lost many players in the past few weeks, but we can adapt to the situation.”

Leeds are in the market for a goalkeeper and could now also be considering bringing in a midfielder.
