New Rangers signing Jermain Defoe has indicated that he is ready to be surprised by the quality of the Scottish top flight in much the same way the MLS took him by surprise when he was at Toronto FC.

Steven Gerrard’s side were looking to add another striker and signed Defoe from Bournemouth on an 18-month loan deal.

The Englishman was not a regular at Bournemouth this season and had made just four appearances in the Premier League prior to his loan move to Ibrox.

Defoe, who played in the MLS with Toronto FC, admits he was surprised with the quality of football and is expecting more of the same in Scotland as Rangers hope to push Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

“I am just looking forward to the challenge and a different league”, Defoe told Rangers’ official website.

“I remember when I went to the MLS for Toronto I was surprised with the quality there.

“As players we all love a challenge and I am looking forward to the games.

“All the games are so big because you are trying to stay at the top of the league, compete and hopefully win a trophy.”

Defoe will hope to leave his mark in the Premiership after scoring 163 goals in the Premier League and making it to the top ten Premier League goalscorers of all time.

The Gers are currently at a warm weather training camp in Tenerife as they prepare for the second half of the season.
