Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson believes Jermain Defoe’s arrival not only adds more quality to the team, but will get the best out of Alfredo Morelos as well.

Morelos has been the club’s leading goalscorer this season, but has had disciplinary issues, having picked up two red cards in the league already.

Rangers have not had the same potency about them in attack without Morelos, despite landing Kyle Lafferty in the summer.

Lafferty has scored just five times in 25 games in all competitions for the Light Blues this season.

Defoe’s arrival might add more goals to the team, but Ferguson believes the Englishman’s presence will push Morelos and vice-versa.

“I think Defoe can be good for Morelos”, Ferguson said on Open Goal.

“It’ll be a wee reality check in what it takes to be a top class player playing at the top."

Morelos has scored 12 goals for the Gers in the Scottish Premiership and is the leading goalscorer in the league.

Defoe might make his Rangers debut later tonight when Steven Gerrard’s side face Cowdenbeath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
