Ron Atkinson believes it will be key how the Manchester United players react to the Paris Saint-Germain defeat in their upcoming games against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Manchester United lost their first game under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s management on Tuesday night when PSG beat them 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

The Premier League giants are now facing an uphill battle to reach the quarter-finals, but ahead of their trip to Paris, they still have key games in two different competitions.

They will be visiting Chelsea on Monday night for an FA Cup fifth-round clash and will be hosting Liverpool after that in a huge Premier League game for both teams.

Atkinson feels the players’ reaction in the next two games will show their character and winning both could get them some momentum ahead of their trip to France next month.

The former Manchester United manager said on MUTV: “It’ll be interesting to see what reaction we’ll see against Chelsea at the weekend and then Liverpool coming up.

“That’s where the players have to show character.

“The players got to say alright, sleeves rolled up a little bit higher and we have lost a game, but let’s make sure we win the next couple.”

And Atkinson believes that Manchester United are more than capable of beating both Chelsea and Liverpool.

“If they did that you know and then went out to PSG on the back that, it would be a big boost in itself.

“Those fixtures are difficult but winnable.

“If they win those, they might just go to the return leg with a little more edge."
