Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has admitted that experiencing the Old Firm derby was a good experience, with Graeme Souness having told him to expect a memorable affair.

Defoe arrived at Ibrox in January on loan from Premier League side Bournemouth and last weekend got his first taste of the Old Firm derby against Celtic.

Though the player managed just seven minutes of first-team action in the match, failing to prevent a loss for the Gers, he insists that it was a good experience for him.

He also took time to reveal that he was told by Souness, who experienced many different derbies during his career, that the Old Firm stands out.

“It was a good experience, obviously it would have been better if we had won the game", Defoe told his club's official website.

“When I first signed I bumped in to Graeme Souness and he said that it is the best derby that he had every played in.

“It’s a special game and as players, those are the games that you want to play in. It’s a massive game and the atmosphere is electric.

“It would have been better if we had won the game.

"I thought that we played well to be honest and we probably played better when we went down to ten men as we controlled the game."

Defoe also took time to stress the words of manager Steven Gerrard to forget about the match and focus on the next one.

“Like the manager said, it’s gone now.

"It was a good experience for me being my first one and I’m looking forward to the next one now.”

Rangers bounced back from the Old Firm defeat earlier this week by putting Hearts to the sword.
