Benfica are closing in on agreeing a new contract with Newcastle United linked midfielder Andreas Samaris in a bid to extend his stay in Lisbon beyond the summer.

Samaris, who is out of contract in the summer, attracted interest from Newcastle during the winter transfer window in January.

The Magpies had been tipped to snap Samaris up, but missed out on a deal, though the Greek midfielder has presented an attractive free transfer signing in the summer.

However, according to Portuguese daily Record, Benfica are locked in talks with Samaris over a new contract that would extend his stay at the Estadio da Luz beyond the summer.

The Greece international was holding out for €1.5m per year as opposed to the €1m offered by Benfica, and it has been claimed that both parties have now compromised as they seek an agreement.

Samaris’ new contract with Benfica could be a blow to the Magpies, as it would appear to end any thoughts of an exit from Portugal.
