Juan Mata has insisted that home advantage is going to be crucial for Manchester United in upcoming big games, despite their patchy form at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have played better away from home under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the last couple of months than at Old Trafford.

They scored just once in the Champions League at home this season and their last two wins over Watford and West Ham came despite a poor performance in front of their fans.

Manchester United have key home games against Manchester City and Chelsea in the coming weeks at home and Mata insisted that Old Trafford will have to play its part in those clashes.

He admits that the last few performances at home have not been up to the mark, but the Spaniard admits that he still prefers to play Old Trafford because of the crowd support.

Mata told Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo: “The games against Watford and West Ham were not brilliant, but we won.

“I prefer to play at home, with the added energy that our fans give us.

“Old Trafford always adds something and it will be vital in the Manchester derby and against Chelsea.”

Manchester United will visit Everton on Saturday as they look to bounce back from exiting the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona.
