Noel Whelan thinks Leeds United missed a trick by not bringing in attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have long appeared on course to win automatic promotion from the Championship, but fingernails are now being bitten at Elland Road as the Whites slug it out with Sheffield United for second spot behind Norwich City.

Leeds have struggled to convert chances on a regular basis and were again made to pay on Good Friday when they suffered a shock loss at home against Wigan Athletic.

They now trail Sheffield United, who signed attacking reinforcements in January, on goal difference and Whelan knows the impact that a fresh face arriving can have.

He said on BBC Radio Leeds following the Wigan loss: "It always gives you a bit of a lift when you bring in a new face in January, it goes to show the intent of the club at times as well.

"Sometimes you need that little bit of help, that little bit of a push over the line.

"These players have got us here so far, but it was just a poor performance today, one that was not worthy of winning a game of football, especially when you defend like that."

Leeds made just one signing in the January transfer window in the shape of goalkeeper Kiko Casilla, who arrived from Real Madrid.

The Yorkshire giants were hoping to land winger Daniel James from Swansea City, but the Welsh club pulled the plug on the transfer on deadline day.
