Atletico Madrid sporting director Andrea Berta has initiated contact with super agent Jorge Mendes over the possibility of a summer swoop for Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi.

Otamendi, who joined the Premier League champions from Valencia in the summer of 2015, has been restricted to just 17 appearances in the Premier League this season.

The Argentine defender has fallen down the pecking order due to the rise to prominence of Aymeric Laporte, as such, popping up on the radar of Atletico Madrid.

And according to Spanish daily AS, Los Rojiblancos have initiated contact with the player’s representative Mendes, through Berta.

Diego Simeone is actively probing the market in search of replacements for the outgoing Diego Godin and Lucas Hernandez, who will join Inter and Bayern Munich respectively during the close season.

Hence the Spanish giants are eyeing lodging a move for Otamendi, who could be tempted with the regular playing minutes on offer at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Otamendi is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2022.
