Chelsea legend Pat Nevin believes that winning the Europa League in Baku at the end of this month would prove to be a fitting farewell for Blues star Gary Cahill.

Cahill, who made the switch to Stamford Bridge from Bolton Wanderers in 2012, has fallen out of favour under Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea this season.

As such, the 33-year-old is poised to leave Chelsea when his contract expires in the summer in a bid to try and continue plying his trade at the highest level.

And in the wake of his announcement that he will be moving on in the summer, Nevin feels that Chelsea winning the Europa League would be a fitting farewell for Cahill.

The Chelsea legend also credited the Blues for handing Cahill an opportunity to get on the pitch and thank the fans during their final home game against Watford on Sunday, while insisting he has been a huge part of the history at the club.

“It was great for him to be given that opportunity to receive the best wishes of the fans on the day and in his turn get the opportunity to thank them for their support", Nevin wrote in his column for the club's official website.

“He has been a huge part in the success of a glorious time in our history. Moreover, he has been a credit to the club with his commitment, play and his attitude from day one.

“Who is to say however that there isn’t another trophy waiting for him to win for the Blues? Anyone for a late back-post header in Baku, I think that would be very fitting.”

Cahill could add to the seven trophies he won at Chelsea during his tenure, if they manage to lift the Europa League at the end of the season.
