Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen will recover in time to feature in the Champions League final.

Tottenham finished the season with a 2-2 draw at home against Everton and fourth in the Premier League behind Chelsea, but ahead of local rivals Arsenal.

But Spurs have a bigger fish to fry in around three weeks’ time when they will visit Madrid to play in the Champions League final against fellow Premier League side Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Pochettino indicated that he took precautionary measure by taking Dele Alli off at half time today after the England midfielder struggled with a niggle in the first half.

But the major concern for the Tottenham boss is Vertonghen, who suffered an ankle injury against Ajax last week and remains doubtful to feature in the final.

Pochettino feels there is still enough time for the Belgian to recover, but insisted that he has the squad to deal with the defender’s injury in the Champions League final.

The Tottenham boss said in a press conference when asked about Alli: “He felt strange in the warm-up and that’s why his performance was so poor in the first half, he couldn’t do what he wanted.

“We made a change at the break but it’s a small problem.”

Pochettino was also asked about Vertonghen, and replied: “Today he was down but there’s a lot of time for him to come back.

“I hope to have all the squad available to play but if we can’t have someone fit then it’s about the team.”
