Rafael Benitez will meet the Newcastle United hierarchy this week over a new contract, but on his current wages he would not be an option for Celtic, according to Sky Sports News.

Benitez is out of contract this summer and his future at Newcastle has continued to dominate the headlines over the course of the season.

Newcastle want him to stay and the fans are desperate to see the Spaniard in the dugout when the new season starts again in a few months’ time.

Benitez has demanded assurances over a potential transfer kitty before agreeing to sign a new contract as far too often Newcastle have not backed him to his satisfaction.

He has been strongly linked with being a potential option for Celtic, but it is claimed on his current level of wages he would not be an option for the Bhoys.

And Benitez is due to meet Newcastle officials later this week, with agreeing a new contract dominating the agenda.

Newcastle are keen to make sure Benitez stays, but it remains to be seen if they will be able to satisfy him with their plans to move the Magpies forward.
