Manchester United have rejected an approach from Barcelona for Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.

Barcelona are resigned to the fact that they look set to miss out on Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt ahead of next season and have been considering alternative targets.

Lindelof has emerged as a possible recruit after a solid season at Manchester United, where he looked the best defender on show in a poor backline that leaked many goals.

According to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona got in touch with Manchester United earlier this month to enquire about the availability of the Sweden international this summer.

But Manchester United rejected the approach in a resounding manner and made it clear that Manchester United will not sell Lindelof ahead of next season.

The Premier League giants are keen to sign a centre-back who can form a strong partnership with the Swede and provide a long term solution to their defensive woes.

They have no intention of selling the former Benfica centre-back, but Barcelona believe Manchester United will sell at a good price.

The Catalan giants feel the Red Devils’ absence from the Champions League could play a role in convincing the player to push for a move this summer.
