West Ham meanwhile have enjoyed a promising start to the season and sit in fifth spot, having taken as many points from their first six games as fourth placed Arsenal and third placed Leicester City.
The Hammers could choose to invest in the January transfer window if a European spot for next season is within touching distance.
Zapata, a Colombia international, is involved in the Champions League with Atalanta this season, though his side lost their group stage opener 4-0 at Dinamo Zagreb.
