Newcastle United have Rochdale talent Luke Matheson on their radar and have been monitoring his progress for over a year, according to the Chronicle.

The 16-year-old grabbed the headlines on Wednesday night as he scored the equaliser against Premier League giants Manchester United in a third round EFL Cup match.

Rochdale were edged out on penalties after the 1-1 draw, but Matheson has grabbed the headlines.

The 16-year-old was not an unknown to Newcastle though as the Magpies have been monitoring his progress at Rochdale for over a year.

The Magpies have been checking up on Matheson ever since he made his debut for Rochdale in an EFL Trophy match.

At 15 years and 336 days, Matheson became the club's youngest ever debutant when he was given game time against now former EFL club Bury.

The defender's heroics at Old Trafford mean he is now likely to be on the radar of a whole host of clubs, who may decide to join Newcastle in taking a close look at him.

Matheson has now clocked a total of eleven senior team appearances for Rochdale and will be hoping to be involved again this weekend when his side face Wycombe at Spotland in League One.
