James McFadden has admitted that Celtic made uncharacteristic mistakes against FC Copenhagen on Thursday evening at Celtic Park and found the most inappropriate moment to have an off night.

Celtic beat Lazio both home and away in the group stage of the Europa League and reached the last 32 as group winners.

A 1-1 draw in Copenhagen last week put them in the driving seat in the tie, but the Danes shocked the Scottish champions at Parkhead and won the game 3-1 to progress in place of Celtic.

McFadden feels Celtic shot themselves in the foot on Thursday night and their defence made uncharacteristic errors to hand the tie to Copenhagen.

He termed the mistakes uncharacteristic as he feels Celtic have been brilliant in Europe this season, but found the worst game to have an off night at the worst possible moment.

The former Scotland international attacker said on BBC Sportsound: “The chances or the half-chances that Copenhagen were given were through errors from Celtic’s point of view.

“That gives you encouragement as a player and you can say right if we keep pressing, someone will make a mistake.

“In fact, all three centre-backs ended up making a mistake and it cost them the game.

“It is something we don’t see from Celtic, we haven’t seen it this season certainly in terms of the amount of chances they offered and the amount of basic errors they made tonight.

“Especially in Europe, they have been fantastic, they have been switched on and they have done everything that has been asked of them.

“To pick a night to have an off night, they couldn’t have picked a worst night and at the worst point in a game.”

Copenhagen have made it to the last 16 of the Europa League for only the second time in their history.
