Former top flight star Tam McManus has insisted that Nathan Patterson is still an excellent player who is suffering due to a lack of game time at Everton, which has affected his confidence.

Patterson has come under fire for his poor performance in Scotland’s 1-0 defeat at home to Northern Ireland on Tuesday night.

The defender was lacklustre, but McManus stressed that most of the Scotland team had a bad night and the Everton star was not the only culprit.

He stressed that the right-back is lacking in confidence because of the limited minutes he has been receiving at Everton, which has affected his morale and his development.

The former top flight striker believes people should cut Patterson some slack give his situation at the moment.

McManus took to X and wrote: “Patterson is an excellent footballer who is lacking in confidence and game time at Everton.

“He was poor to be honest and had a bit of a stinker but so did most of the Scotland team on the night.

“Some of the comments are a nonsense.”

Patterson joined Everton from Rangers in January 2022 but is yet to secure a regular spot in the team.

He has made nine starts in the Premier League this season and has featured just 47 times in total for Everton since arriving at Goodison Park.
