Aston Villa target Mario Hermoso will not be signing a new contract with Atletico Madrid and will be leaving the club on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old centre-back’s future has been under the scanner due to his contract situation at Atletico Madrid.

His current deal runs until the summer and the club have been trying to convince him to sign a new contract to extend his stay at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Several clubs have been keeping their eyes peeled on his situation in the Spanish capital ahead of the summer transfer window, with Aston Villa claimed to be in pole position to scoop him up.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.com, the defender has made a decision on his future and will not be signing a new contract.

Hermoso will now leave the Spanish giants in the summer on a free transfer and join a new club.

He has been linked with a move to Italy where Juventus and AC Milan are keen to sign him on a free transfer.

However, Aston Villa will be hopeful that they can see off competition for the defender and take him to the Premier League.

Unai Emery is a fan of Hermoso and is pushing to convince him to move to Villa Park ahead of next season.
