Former Holland star Rene van der Gijp has indicated that Arne Slot will face the daunting task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp as the German has basically a God-like status in Liverpool.

Liverpool are in talks with Feyenoord to get their hands on Slot as their new manager in the summer.

Klopp will leave at the end of the season and the Feyenoord coach has emerged as the preferred candidate for the Merseyside giants.

There are already voices who are not sure about Liverpool going for a manager who is not proven outside the Netherlands.

Slot successfully succeeded legendary Dutch coach Dick Advocaat at Feyenoord but Van der Gijp insisted that the scenario is a bit different at Liverpool.

He stressed that Klopp is basically Jesus for Liverpool fans and the Reds are also set to lose key players such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in the near future.

Van der Gijp said on Vandaag Inside: “That’s right [Slot succeeded Advocaat at Feyenoord] but Klopp has been at Liverpool for nine years.

“He has his own cafe, the Klopp cafe, he is Jesus there.

“And everyone is leaving – [Mohamed] Salah is leaving, [Virgil] van Dijk is leaving and I am 100 per cent convinced about it.”

Feyenoord have rejected Liverpool’s €9m compensation package and are holding out for somewhere around €15m.
