Sunderland star Max Power has saluted team-mate Grant Leadbitter for a stellar display against Portsmouth in the League One playoff semi-final, following the passing of his mother.

Jack Ross’ men booked their berth in the League One promotion playoff final against Charlton Athletic on Sunday with a 1-0 win on aggregate against Portsmouth in the semi-final last week.

The Black Cats produced a gritty display to hold Pompey to a 0-0 draw in the return leg at Fratton Park and preserved their narrow first leg lead to progress to the final at Wembley.

Sunderland’s qualification was ensured on the back of an impressive display from the players, including Leadbitter, who took to the field despite the passing of his mother.

And ahead of their hugely-significant final on Sunday, Power has saluted Leadbitter for overcoming the personal tragedy of losing his mother and putting on a stellar display for Sunderland.

Power admitted that everyone, including himself, within the team have huge respect for Leadbitter and his commitment towards Sunderland.

“I was shocked after the game because we didn't know prior to it what had happened. He was obviously a bit upset after the game and the team found out what had gone on”, Power told a press conference.

“We were all buzzing after that we'd won, but then that was really put into perspective with what he'd been through. The lads were overwhelmed by what he'd done.

“To keep that to himself and then put in the performance he did – he was outstanding on the night – that is just testament to the character that he is.

“My respect was already there for him, but it's gone through the roof now.”

The Sunderland midfielder also claimed that Leadbitter is the perfect example of someone who really understands what it means to represent the club and reiterated that everyone appreciates his efforts.

“Grant is another example of someone who really understands what it takes to play for this club and I'm sure the fans will really appreciate what he's done”, he continued.

“Since he walked through the door in January that's what he's been like.

"He's Sunderland through and through and he's desperate to get this club back up through the divisions.”

Sunderland have been boosted by the return of Aidan McGeady, who is in contention to make an appearance in the playoff final, after returning to training following an injury.
