The contract situation of Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is causing some stress within the corridors of power at the Camp Nou.

Abidal has been linked with both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent days, but the Frenchman’s first choice is still to remain at Barcelona if he can agree a new contract.

That has proven to be far from easy however and the situation is growing more pressing.

"I think that the negotiations for his new contract are stressing me more than the player", commented Barcelona’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

"So, we’ll see how the situation proceeds", added the former goalkeeping great.

The 32-year-old is a popular figure at the Camp Nou and coach Josep Guardiola is hoping a new deal can be signed between player and club.

Abidal signed for Barcelona in 2007 from Lyon.
