Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has confirmed his interest in Ajax centre back Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian, who is Ajax’s captain, lifted the Dutch Eredivisie shield last night after his side beat VVV-Venlo 2-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Post match Vertoghen admitted that his departure from Frank de Boer’s men is very much on the agenda in the summer and Ajax are keen to ensure value is raised from the Belgian, with his current contract due to expire in 2013.

Tottenham, along with rivals Arsenal, have been repeatedly linked with Vertonghen over the course of the campaign, and now Redknapp has confirmed Spurs’ have kept a close eye on the defender.

“He’s a player I’ve watched. He’s a very good player”, Redknapp told the BBC.

The Tottenham boss expects significant opposition for Vertonghen’s signature too, if he was to make a move.

“But there are lots of clubs interested in him. We’ve not spoken to the club, he’s just a player I’ve watched along with loads of other players this year.”
