Newcastle United are cooling their interest in Dutch striker Luuk de Jong after FC Twente shrugged their shoulders at the Magpies’ latest bid for the 21-year-old.

Alan Pardew’s men are one of two clubs to have made official offers for De Jong – the other being Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach – and Newcastle even sent a delegation to Holland over the weekend to negotiate directly with the Tukkers.

Newcastle’s latest bid for De Jong is understood to be €14M, but this sum has met with a cool reception at Twente, who do not want to sell the young goal-getter just yet.

Indeed, Twente coach Steve McClaren has been consistent in his view that only an "absurd" offer will tempt the Eredivisie side into selling the Dutchman.

And with Newcastle unwilling to increase their offer once again (the Magpies have had two bids knocked back), De Jong is looking unlikely to move to St. James’ Park.

However, there does remain the possibility that De Jong will push for a move away from Twente – and that could change the dynamics of the situation.

The player’s agent Louis Laros has indicated that the Holland international feels ready to try his luck in a bigger league and does not believe leaving the Eredivisie at this juncture would harm his development.

"Luuk played for the Dutch national team last season and scored 25 goals in the Eredivisie", said Laros.

"What more can he do? Score 35?"
