According to Madrid-based daily Marca, Real Madrid considered moving to sign Santi Cazorla from Malaga, but were put off by the fact that the Andalusian club would demand a fee far beyond the player’s value.

Cazorla is expected to soon seal a switch to English giants Arsenal and is in London for that purpose. The news was greeted with some dismay by sections of the Real Madrid faithful, who would have liked the Spain international to land at the Bernabeu.

Los Blancos did ponder adding Cazorla, but Jose Mourinho, in conjunction with the club’s board, dismissed the idea, due to the price Malaga would demand.

Real Madrid are wary of fellow Spanish sides placing an exorbitant price-tag on players sought by the club and, with Luka Modric still expected to arrive from Tottenham Hotspur at some point in the transfer window, Mourinho was willing to pass on Cazorla.

Cazorla’s stock remains high in Spain and the prospect of another of the national team’s finest performers moving outside La Liga is not a popular one amongst the Real Madrid faithful.

For Arsenal though, snaring the winger, who only joined Malaga last summer from Villarreal, will be a real coup.
