AC Milan and Juventus fear that Zenit St. Petersburg are leading the race to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United, according to sources in Italy.

Berbatov is expected to exit Old Trafford this summer in search of regular playing time, a stance boss Sir Alex Ferguson well understands, but where the Bulgarian might end up is still unclear.

His substantial salary has ruled out a whole host of interested parties and at present the most likely destinations for the former Tottenham Hotspur man are Italy and Russia.

Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti rates Berbatov highly and believes the striker would help the Russian champions to make a splash in the Champions League.

The 31-year-old however is thought to be excited by the prospect of playing his football in Serie A in the new season and his agent recently suggested that Berbatov could replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic at AC Milan.

Both Milan and Juventus, who hold an interest in the Manchester United star, could struggle to compete with the riches on offer in Russia though.

Where Berbatov might end up is still open to question, but it does appear his list of destinations is narrowing.

The striker made just 12 appearances in the Premier League last season, though he did find the back of the net an impressive seven times.
