Arsenal and Manchester United are both keen on Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol, according to Spanish daily AS.

Albiol only penned a new contract with Los Blancos on 7th August, but has not seen his playing time increase this season and remains a backup option for manager Jose Mourinho.

relatedNewsStory Last season the 27-year-old managed just ten La Liga appearances all year and, with his situation appearing not quickly about to change, clubs are beginning to look in his direction despite the signing of a deal running until 2017.

And two of these sides are English, in the form of giants Arsenal and Manchester United.

Both clubs are believed to be looking closely at Albiol and each are well aware of the Spaniard’s ability to play not just in the centre of defence, but also as a defensive midfielder.

It remains to be seen just how open Albiol will be to a move or Real Madrid to parting ways with the former Valencia man.

However, if the defender’s situation is unchanged by the time the January window opens, a departure from the Bernabeu could be taken seriously.

Albiol joined Real Madrid in 2009 from Valencia.

He has clocked up 36 caps for Spain, but has been concerned about his role in Vicente del Bosque’s squad given his limited playing time under Mourinho.
