Chelsea and Liverpool are stepping up their interest in Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to Canal +.

Both English Premier League clubs sent talent spotters to watch Gomis in this evening’s crunch Ligue 1 clash against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.

And the expectation is growing that the pair may do battle for the 27-year-old when the transfer window opens next month.

Indeed, Chelsea are believed to have already entered initial negotiations with Les Gones over taking Gomis to Stamford Bridge.

The striker, who has been one of the main reasons behind Lyon’s impressive form this season, scoring ten goals in 17 Ligue 1 games, recently went on record as stating that he is keen to finish the season at the Stade Gerland.

But with financial pressures still affecting Lyon, Gomis may not be given any choice.

The French side have suffered through missing out on Champions League football, while they are also funding an expensive new stadium.

Whether Gomis would prefer to join Chelsea or Liverpool, assuming each have a bid accepted, remains to be seen.

Each club need to enter the transfer market to boost their attacking power, with Fernando Torres still struggling to carry the goalscoring burden at Chelsea, while Liverpool have just one fit striker in Luis Suarez, following a disastrous summer transfer window.

Intriguingly, were Chelsea to snap up Gomis ahead of the Reds, the door to Daniel Sturridge leaving Stamford Bridge for Liverpool could be opened further.
