Sunderland are once again in the market to help achieve a defensive stability at the club, with an offer made for Argentine Lucas Orban, according to the player’s agent.

Orban is currently playing for Atletico Tigre in Argentina’s ongoing premier division season, and has managed a total of 28 league appearances so far.

He cut his teeth in professional football at River Plate, playing for their youth team first and then turning out 11 times for the senior side in 2009, whilst also having a loan spell at Tigre.

And his overall displays appear to have impressed Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio, who is understood to have tabled an offer for the 24-year-old.

Orban’s agent Filippo Colasanto told Tutto Mercato: "There was an offer from Sunderland who moved in a concrete and timely way – making an offer to the player’s family.

"We talked about it, but the boy preferred to take time at the moment and maybe finish the championship in Argentina and then choose with confidence."

The Black Cats, who narrowly survived relegation, have so far made many enquiries for defenders, most recently from BATE Borisov and Di Canio’s former haunting ground Lazio.

Orban has been garnering interest from clubs in Italy and Spain as well, but Colasanto feels his client is best suited for the English game.

"Orban is a defender, first of all", he added. "And then the guy is very strong and perfect for the English league.

"In Italy, for example, things could become harder as the championship there is more tactical."
