Barcelona are taking steps to prepare for the possible departure of Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United by reviving their interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The Blaugrana have long been admirers of the Germany international, who saw his stock rocket further over the course of last season as he helped Jurgen Klopp’s men reach the final of the Champions League.

According to Catalan daily Sport, Barcelona have become convinced that Alcantara’s agents will inform the club over the coming days that their client will join Manchester United.

And that will leave Barcelona needing to sign an equally promising replacement for the Spain Under-21 star.

Gundogan, who has always remained in Barcelona’s thoughts, is understood to top the list of replacements being drawn up at the Camp Nou.

Dortmund however will not be keen to lose the midfielder, especially given Mario Gotze’s transfer to Bayern Munich this summer.

Ironically, Gundogan has also seen himself linked with Manchester United, although the Red Devils appear to have settled on Alcantara.
