Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted that when he said an amount near Luis Suarez’s value had not been offered, amid a bid from Arsenal, he did not mean that if a larger bid arrives then the Uruguayan will be sold.

Suarez has linked up with Liverpool’s pre-season tour party in Australia, despite having been vocal over his desire for a move away from the Reds this summer.

Arsenal have had an offer for Suarez rejected and the Gunners are expected to return with an improved bid.

Rodgers though is cutting the figure of someone who wants Suarez to stay and is not interested in entertaining bids for the forward, whatever their value.

"There’s been a lot of speculation over the course of the close season but the reality is that he’s a player who is very much valued at Liverpool and unless there’s any sort of offer that comes in that’s anywhere near his value, there’s nothing to consider", he was quoted as saying by his club’s official site.

"We haven’t had that", he added.

Pressed on the value Liverpool would be looking for, Rodgers then hinted that what he had said was a figure of speech and there is no amount he is keen to sell Suarez for.

"I didn’t say we would sell him! I said that every player has a value and a worth. Doesn’t mean you’ve got to sell them."
