Fulham have taken the initiative regarding the signing of Zulte Waregem man Junior Malanda with negotiations under way for the player also courted by Premier League rivals Everton, according to Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad.

Malanda had skipped training at Zulte Waregem amid reports of English clubs seeking his services, a move that left the Belgian outfit "surprised".

It now appears that the 18-year-old has been in talks with Fulham about a transfer, as reports in Belgium indicated he had travelled to London yesterday alongwith his father.

Zulte Waregem were expected to continue attempts at keeping Malanda, especially with the club due for their UEFA Champions League qualifying-round clash against PSV Eindhoven in early August.

However, forcing the player to remain in Belgium is not something chairman Willy Naessens is prepared to do.

He was quoted by Het Nieuwsblad as saying: "We can fight this in the legal way, but that is really the last resort."

Malanda had moved to break his contract with Zulte Waregem, despite the club leaving the door open for the talented midfielder.

The Belgian had two years left on his deal with the Jupiler Pro League side, but it is understood he will almost certainly be playing abroad next season.
