Sunderland have formally missed out on the signing of Lucas Orban as the Argentine joins Bordeaux on a four-year deal.

Black Cats boss Paolo Di Canio was understood to have considered Orban a vital addition to his left-back detail, even as Sevilla and Villarreal were linked.

The player’s agent had revealed last month that Sunderland had placed an offer for Orban, whilst indicating the defender was well suited for life in the English game.

However, Orban has now completed his move from Argentine side Atletico Tigre ending his one-year stay at the club.

Orban is a graduate of the famed River Plate academy and even made 11 appearances for their senior side.

He spent time on loan at Tigre for a season in 2011/12 and then made a permanent move to Diego Cagna’s side.

Overall he played 64 times for Tigre, and has now made the leap towards Bordeaux, who missed European football last season by nine points, finishing seventh in Ligue 1.

A statement on Bordeaux’s official site read: "FC Girondins de Bordeaux confirm that an agreement has been reached with Atletico Tigre for the transfer of Lucas Orban for four years, subject to the signing of paperwork and a medical.

"The player will be presented to the press on Thursday. The whole club wishes him a welcome among us."
